Chapter 6 and 10

Chapter 6

The purpose of this chapter is to help us how to set up our future while evaluating our present. Periodically evaluating our career helps us to assess the progress we have made and plan our next move. A career plan outlines the path we plan to take to achieve our career goals. It should include the education, job experience and industry knowledge we need to gain to reach the job of our dreams. The plan should also incorporate a timeline and milestones that we hope to reach at certain points along our career path.
When talking about setting up my future I am looking to gain a positive experience from the decision I have made for myself. One positive experience I hope to take away from attaining higher education is being able to network with different types of people, and attending a university will give me that chance. I believe that creating relationships through networking would be beneficial to me and learning exactly how to connect with people on different levels whether it is age, culture, or just the diverse outlooks on life someone might come by in the wide range of situations associated with my career choice. The feeling of self accomplishment I would achieve upon completion would be of great personal value for me to take away. It will give me the confidence that I need to achieve my goals.
Chapter 10

The initial impression you make on others is, if not indelible, certainly a huge determinant in how people will feel about you for quite some time. It is one of the main reasons why we could be a good candidate for the position we are applying for, of course, including our experiences and education level if is required. If you make a bad impression upfront, you will have to combat that bias.  It's like running uphill.  On the other hand, if you make a good impression, you can ride on it.  It's like running downhill.  That being said makes sure to dress professionally, smile, give a firm handshake, and introduce you properly.
The thing that is the most important when attending an interview is not how you answer questions.  It is the impression that you leave behind. The first thing about making a good impression is to be positive. Condition your mind to be positive and optimistic about your future so that when you see the interviewer for the first time as he or she walks towards you, that smile that is on your face is sincere.
To conclude, remember that you will be chosen not based on any specific answers that you give, but on the overall impression that you leave behind.  Trusting yourself is the central and most important thing you need to remember.  If you don't trust yourself, nobody will.

Chapter 3 and 4

Chapter 3

This chapter put in plain words how “good thinking” help us to adjust how to understand a situation. It discusses the difference between a “negative thinking” and“right-mind thinking.” For a pessimist or “negative thinker”, there is always something to worry about, nothing is ever quite right, bad events seem to last forever, and they surely outweigh the positive ones. Life means fear and sadness most of the time. An optimist person or “right-mind thinker” acknowledges negative circumstances, but chooses to be positive about them and looks for “the hidden gift”, or even thinks of how to change the situation.
This chapter also points out the “mindset” which is an established set of attitudes held by someone. A fixed mindset is one in which you view your talents and abilities as well, fixed. In other words, you are who you are, your intelligence and talents are fixed, and your fate is to go through life avoiding challenge and failure. A growth mindset, on the other hand, is one in which you see yourself as fluid, a work in progress. Your fate is one of growth and opportunity.
Chapter 4

In this chapter the main idea is to show us, students, how to make our major useful in a workplace. It also gives us tips to improve our grades and see the positive aspects of why it is important to be an educated person. Once we have made a decision to move forward with particular major, students must learn to embrace their choice and be able to articulate how it will contribute to their future success.

Informational Interview

http://career.ucla.edu/Students/ExploreCareers/WhatIsAnInformationalInterview.aspx

An Informational Interview involves talking with people who are currently working in the field to gain a better understanding of an occupation or industry and to build a network interest in that field. It is less stressful for both you and the employer than a typical job interview since you are the one in control.

Informational interviews can be a useful tool throughout your career, not just when you’re thinking about a new job or a new line of work. You can do informational interviews when you want to learn more about a certain career move or even what it would feel like to get involved in a new project like writing a book, starting a blog, or running your own company.

The above websites will show you:

  • How to Conduct an Informational Interview
  • Informational Interview Questions to Ask
  • Follow Up With a Thank You Note
And, some question for an Informational Interview are:

  1. Can you tell me about a typical day on the job?
  2. How did you get started doing this type of work?
  3. What is your favorite part of your job?
  4. What is your least favorite part of your job?
  5. What surprised you the most when you started working in this field?
  6. What is the typical salary range for someone in this line of work? (People are typically uncomfortable stating their salaries, but if you ask in this more general way you can often get an idea of the range.)
  7. How do you see this industry developing in the future? How is your industry changing?
  8. What advice would you give to someone who wants to get started in this industry?
  9. What are employers typically looking for when hiring people in this line of work?
  10. My background and experience is (briefly note your major qualifications). How do that compare with employers' expectations when hiring in this industry?
This question gives you the opportunity to present some of your qualifications to your contact, and if your contact is aware of a job opening, it can prompt him or her to mention that.

Self-Assesment

Who am I? Everyday people from all around the world ask themselves who they really are. Many people still don’t know who they are and may never know. Self-Assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Many pieces to your question can be found like what are your likes, dislikes, behavior attitude, and habits when you complete this process. By discovering these you can always use this as an advantage by changing your weakness and by accepting your strengths. Self Assessment is an important process in having a successful future.
Doing this self-assessment on my own communication skills I did not find out that many new things that I already didn’t know myself. I know that I have a little difficult time expressing what I want to say in a room full of new people or new coworkers. I know I tend to not talk about what is on my mind because I am afraid of hurting other people’s feelings I also know that I have the type of attitude that when I become more comfortable in a new place or with new people I will become friendlier, open up, and easier to communicate with.

The following skills are necessary for a successful career. Teamwork, understanding the type of business, interpersonal communication and leadership. Things I plan to work on are prioritizing, and efficiency. I tend to panic when I have multiple jobs to do; so I need to prioritize and work on one thing at a time. Professional development starts with school and career as described above. Some additional items that are important for professional development are a good resume, contact with experts in the field, continuing education ( very important in today’s workforce), certifications, enjoying what you do, and a balance of work, family, and other interest.

Résumé

A résumé  is a document used by individuals to present their background and skillsets. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons but most often to secure new employment. A typical résumé contains a summary of relevant job experience and education. The résumé is usually one of the first items, along with a cover letter and sometimes job application packet, that a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an interview, when seeking employment.
